For tips on draining the manual transmission on the mk4 VW Golf TDI, Jetta, or New Beetle, see 1000q: Just move it 2 millimeters per adjustment. The plastic shifter linkage has also been known to break due to age and wear. To replace it, remove the adjustment nut and slip the cable off the end by lifting the retainer up. If you remove it First, put the shifter in neutral, then loosen the shifter linkage adjusting nuts/bolts. Second insert the locating gage. There is a slot at the bottom of the shifter where the locating gage inserts. It's simple. On the left side of the transmisson is the linkage. Take a couple of 13mm wrenches under it, loosen the clamp on the rod. Move the lever all the way forward to get park. Have the shifter lever inside the car in park as well, and snug it back down. Don't overtighten it, or it can break..been there, done that. Remove your center console. Put the car in neutral and wiggle the shifter around. The transmission will go into dead neutral position on its own. NOTE-On the back of the shifter assembly is a u-clip which slides front to back and locks the shifter in dead neutral. Disconnect the shift cables from the shifter assembly. The first step is to loosen the locknut and adjuster nut slightly. Next pull up on the clutch cable and make sure the locknut and adjuster can be turned by hand. Step 2: Adjust the clutch lever. Now that the adjustment nut and locknut are loose, pull up on the clutch cable again. You will feel a point where the clutch lever engages. adjusting shifter linkage 02J manual transmission **update** My Beetle is an early 1999 and it has the 02J tranny. Is there a field method to adjust the shifter linkage on the early 02J? Connect the cable end fitting to the transmission lever ball stud. Push up on the lock tab to lock the cable in the correctly adjusted position. Lower vehicle down from hoist and remove the three-pound weight from the column shift select lever. After making the adjustment, check for park engagement. The transmission should be in Park during evaluation. The linkage adjustment procedure is critical for proper transmission operation; therefore, several checks need to be performed after. the linkage is adjusted: - Inspect the operation of the starting system with the shift lever in each position.
